The final price after a discount is calculated as: Final Price = Original Price × (1 - Discount Percentage / 100). For a single item with a discount, the savings are: Savings = Original Price - Final Price. When applying multiple stacked coupons, each discount is applied sequentially to the current price. For example, with two coupons of d1% and d2%, the intermediate price after the first discount is P1 = Original Price × (1 - d1/100), and the final price is P2 = P1 × (1 - d2/100). The total savings then equal Original Price - P2. If quantity Q is involved, the total original cost is Q × Original Price, and the total final cost is Q × Final Price (after all discounts). The total savings are Q × (Original Price - Final Price). This sequential multiplication is used because percentage discounts are multiplicative, not additive; applying them in sequence accurately reflects a reduction on the reduced price. The formula is mathematically correct because it follows the definition of a percentage decrease: a discount of d% means paying (100-d)% of the original, expressed as a decimal multiplier.

A jacket originally costs $120. The store offers a 25% off discount. First, convert 25% to decimal: 0.25. Multiply: $120 × (1 - 0.25) = $120 × 0.75 = $90. The final price is $90. Savings: $120 - $90 = $30. So you pay $90 and save $30.
Electronics with Stacked Coupons
A laptop is priced at $800. You have a 10% store coupon and a 5% loyalty coupon, applied sequentially. First discount: $800 × (1 - 0.10) = $800 × 0.90 = $720. Then apply the second: $720 × (1 - 0.05) = $720 × 0.95 = $684. Final price: $684. Total savings: $800 - $684 = $116. Note that the discounts are not additive (15% would give $680, a slight difference).
Bulk Office Supplies Order
You buy 50 binders at $3 each, with a 20% bulk discount. Original total cost: 50 × $3 = $150. Discount multiplier: 1 - 0.20 = 0.80. Final price per binder: $3 × 0.80 = $2.40. Total final cost: 50 × $2.40 = $120. Total savings: $150 - $120 = $30.
A 'good' discount percentage is relative to the item's usual markup and your budget. Discounts below 10% are modest and often used as loyalty incentives; 20-30% is common for seasonal sales; 40-60% indicates clearance or high-margin items; above 70% is rare and may signal overstock or discontinued products. For savings in dollars, compare the final price to similar items or your personal value threshold. A high savings percentage doesn't always mean a good deal if the original price was inflated. Always consider the absolute savings: saving 50% on a $10 item is $5, while saving 20% on a $100 item is $20. For stacked coupons, the order matters slightly if coupons are percentage-based; applying the larger discount first yields a slightly lower final price due to the multiplicative effect. Quantity discounts often have diminishing returns—buying more isn't always better if you don't need the items. Use the calculator to compare per-unit costs before committing.
A common mistake is adding discount percentages instead of multiplying sequentially.
